Clean, Classic Beauty That Stands the Test of Time

When we look back at the most popular beauty trends over the past decades, some are amazing, while others are pretty cringe-worthy.

For example, I’m not a big fan of the bold and neon makeup of the ‘80s, but I LOVE the glamorous makeup style of the 1950’s. That being said, even certain elements of that all-dolled-up ‘50s look have gone out of style today. So, what separates fleeting beauty trends from beauty that never goes out of style? That’s a tough question which several timeless beauty icons from the 1950s and ‘60s can help us to answer.

Beauty Icon #1 is none other than the fabulous Grace Kelly.

Grace Kelly’s signature makeup look is classy and elegant. She always looks polished with a pop of color. Notably, Grace’s eye-makeup is never too dramatic—she wears subtle eyeshadow and sports neat, lightly lined eyebrows. This serves to compliment her bright pinkish-red lipstick perfectly. With this makeup style, she could fit right in whether it be the 1950s or 2020.

Beauty Icon #2 is Dorothy Dandridge.

Dorothy Dandridge is STUNNING and probably my favorite beauty icon of the 1950s. Dorothy’s signature look includes rich red lipstick with orange undertones. She uses darker eyeshadow colors to accent her brown eyes perfectly, in a style similar to the modern-day smokey eye. Her makeup style is timeless because it’s so vibrant without being overwhelming.

Beauty Icon #3 is Lauren Hutton.

Lauren Hutton is the queen of natural beauty from the late ‘60s and ‘70s. She often wears coral colored lipstick and blush complimented by light foundation and bronzer. This allows her natural skin and freckles to shine through for a gorgeous “no-makeup” look, which is very popular right now. Lauren goes with the “less is more” look in terms of eyeshadow and mascara, which keeps the focus on her lips and cheekbones, while slightly accenting her blue eyes.

Last, but certainly not least, is Beauty Icon #4, Sophia Loren.

Italian beauty Sophia Loren’s look so distinctly embodies 1950s Hollywood glamour and yet, it still has this element of timelessness to it. Sophia is one of the pioneers of the modern-day cat-eye look; she’s known for her bold, dark eyeliner. To add to her bold and beautiful look, Sophia keeps her eyebrows thick and accentuates them with dark liner. Her makeup look is tied together with a classic, reddish-pink lipstick.
