How To Self-Motivate

Goodbyes are hard when your bed is just that cozy.

Goodbyes are hard when your bed is just that cozy.

“It won’t be so bad,” we said.

“Now I’ll finally have some time to focus on me,” we said.

Well … time’s up.

There was probably a point in time for all of us when we had high hopes for our quarantine selves. What a great opportunity it seemed to be to focus on ourselves and crush those goals we’ve been dying to meet.

Some of that excitement probably lasted a lot longer for some than others, but nonetheless, here we are… still self-isolating (at least in NY).

We all miss our friends, we miss our families, we want the old normal back. For now though, we need to make the most of what we have.

To say the least, the days have become pretty monotonous, but whether you’re working from home or not, it’s so important to stay on top of your tasks and keep busy. Here are a few tips that will keep you motivated while you stay in.

1. SCHEDULE YOUR DAY

I can not stress enough how life changing to-do lists can be. Buy a cute note pad for your desk, like this one, or even use your ‘Reminders’ app to write out all of the things you need to get done in the next day before you go to bed. This way, your goals are already set to be accomplished before you wake up.

2. ESTABLISH A MORNING ROUTINE

I don’t know about you, but my morning cup of coffee alone is enough to get me excited and out of bed. This said, I have very specific morning rituals that help to keep me on track and set a positive tone for the day. Try keeping little things consistent, like making yourself a healthy breakfast, adding a scoop of collagen to your mug every day, reading the news or your favorite blog during breakfast (wink wink), completing a quick workout, writing down your daily goals, or meditating for a few minutes.

3. SHARE YOUR GOALS

Whether your goals are fitness related, career related or just personal aspirations, tell a friend or family member about them. Sharing your goals with others will help them hold you accountable on days when you can’t seem to find the motivation within yourself. You might even come to find that they have the same goals and will want to join you in striving to reach them!

4. PACK A BAG

Work from home sounded amazing for a while, but having your comfy bed right around the corner can be a major cause of lacking motivation. For those who still have to get up and work in the morning, packing your bag as if you were going to leave for the office is actually a game-changer. Put your laptop, notebook or anything else you need for WFH into a bag before bed, get up the next morning, change out of those pajamas, and head to a designated workspace to maintain a bit of normalcy.

5. MEDITATE

Often when people hear about meditation, they immediately relate it to a very spiritual practice. In reality, meditation can be as simple as taking a few quiet minutes to yourself and reflecting on your day. I recommend using this app before bed or first thing in the morning just to organize your thoughts and release any stressors that may be holding you back. It’s unbelievably easy and can turn your day around in as few as 3 minutes.

These are all small tips that have personally helped me keep motivated through the crazy time we’re living through right now. My biggest piece of advice, however, is to write down your goals. Once you’ve done this, make sure that they’re somewhere visible on an everyday basis to serve as that extra push that we all need sometimes. Make this a regular practice, even after quarantine ends, and you’ll see progress, no matter what those goals may be.

Stay safe, we’ve got this!
