Keeping Relationships Afloat in a Socially Distant World

While the global pandemic has given us all time to de-stress and unwind from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, there is only so much alone time one can take before falling into a socially-distant depression. As humans, we are raised with an innate need for human touch and interaction, and while COVID-19 makes those needs a bit harder to fulfill, I am here to assure you that it is completely possible.

Whether it be a relationship or a friendship, there are numerous ways to keep up interactions while still abiding to social distancing guidelines.

One of my favorite ideas when it comes to being social in a socially distant world is the power of a care package. From something as small as a letter or homemade card to box filled with goodies like snacks and a scented candle, a care package is such a great underrated way to show someone you care and that you are thinking of them. In these trying times, everyone could use a little pick-me-up, and what better gift than a box filled with uplifting messages and good vibes.

Beyond a package of love, Facetime and phone calls are a great way to catch up with new and old friends. You know, those friends who live hundreds of miles away that you always talk about visiting or calling, but you never have the time. What better time than now to reach out and catch up on your old college roomie’s life? You’ll be surprised just how good it feels to reminisce on old memories while getting up-to-date on all of the changes and chaos in your friends’ lives.

Now, I do realize that there’s only so much to facetime and chat about over the phone, and when you’ve outdone yourself in these platforms, you may still be craving more social interaction.

While COVID has definitely limited the amount of activities available to you and your friends, there are still a plethora of fun activities you can take up with your friends or significant other. My number one tip is to GET OUTSIDE. Look up local overlooks and hikes near you, pack a bag and get moving. In addition to discovering great new paces and making memories with friends, you’ll have the added bonus of toning those muscles and getting a much needed rush of endorphins post-hike. As an alternative to hiking but still boasting a scenic view, look into renting paddle boards or kayaks and get out on the water.

A last idea that illuminates a more positive side to social distancing is outdoor dining. Pack a picnic and head to your nearest vineyard! Look up a brewery near you and hit a food truck. The only thing better than good food and drinks is good food and drinks with a sunset and fresh breeze.

All in all, whether you are sticking to a strict social distancing or being lenient with outdoor hangouts, there are ways to be social in a socially distant world.
