A Guide to Looking Chic in NYC

I’ve lived in New York City for almost four years now, and over the course of my time in the city that never sleeps I’ve come to discover why NYC is one of the leading fashion capitals of the world.

New York’s style is both hard to define and easy to recognize; the style is so individual yet also very cohesive. One common theme across style aesthetics, however, is practicality. To keep up with the constant hustle-bustle of the city, continue reading to gain some tips on dressing like the locals.

OVERCOATS

NYC winters are notorious for being extremely cold, so a chic overcoat is the perfect way to stay warm and stylish. The perfect layering piece, pairing an overcoat with a blanket scarf, gloves, and boots will give you the ultimate New Yorker-in-winter aesthetic.

MONOCHROME LOOKS

Whether it’s a full magenta suit with heels or a casual, all-black ensemble, monochromatic looks are seen all over the city. The reason? They’re quick outfits to put together that are guaranteed to look good every time.

QUALITY SHOES

For one reason or another, walking long distances in New York is not as dreadful of an experience as in other places — that is, if you’re wearing the proper shoes. Sneakers, comfortable boots, and ballet flats are often seen out and about much more than a pair of pumps, and if someone is wearing heels they likely have a more comfortable change of shoes in their bag.

SUNGLASSES

From large-framed black sunglasses to trendier statement shades, the right pair of sunglasses instantly adds a chic, NYC edge to any look. Adding a pair of sunglasses to your look is a practical way to elevate any outfit, and is one of the key pieces to looking like a true New Yorker.
