Your Guide to Thrifting Fall 2020’s Biggest Trends

Fall is officially in full swing, bringing with it some of the best fashion ever (in my humble opinion). Sundresses and shorts are fun...but, cold weather? The possibilities are endless. Boots, coats and sweaters are my love language. Here’s how to thrift some of the biggest trends of the season if you’re on a budget or simply looking to live a little more sustainably.

Trend #1: Leather

Leather is arguably one of the most harmful fabrics when it comes to the environmental impact of fashion. Harmful byproducts and farming practices may not be what you’re in the market for when shopping for the perfect leather jacket to add to your Fall ‘20 wardrobe, so buying your leather (coats, pants, and boots) secondhand is the way to go.

Trend #2: Button-Down Shirts

Do yourself a favor and take a page out of the menswear book by borrowing the classic oversized button-down shirt. Great options of this classic piece are available in excess at any second hand store from Goodwill to The Real Real or Vestiaire Collective. Whether you prefer yours with blue pinstripes or in a timeless stark-white, these shirts make for the perfect preppy piece (another hot trend as we bring back the early aughts). Layer a silk camisole over your button-down for a major lingerie-to-the-streets moment.

Trend #3: Western Footwear

The trend hailed by many as the newest thing for Spring, Summer and Resort ‘20 is still alive and well. Cowboy boots are the perfect spin on the heeled leather fall boot as seen below on Danielle of WeWoreWhat. A quick search on any secondhand site will bring up knee-high options, mid-calf options and a whole array of colors. Pro-tip: the best cowboy boots are secondhand, aka already broken in!

Trend #4: Sweater Vests

The sleeveless knit that was almost exclusively used in wardrobes to mark the nerd archetype of comedy movies set in unrealistic high schools has been given a facelift: meet the sweater vest of 2020. Slouchy knits meet chunky varsity styles and metallic fabrics (plus layering) and you’ve got an outfit that can’t be ignored. These vests are in abundance at thrift stores, mostly pieces that are bordering on vintage, so snag one and incorporate it into your next outfit. (Whether you want to blame Harry Styles or the cyclical nature of fashion is up to you).
