Top TV-Inspired Makeup Trends from the 1950’s to Today

Media influences so much of the evolving fashion and beauty trends in our world. Makeup styles, in particular, wax and wane each decade with variations of colors used, amount worn, and features highlighted.

As a way to inspire your next look and celebrate leading ladies from iconic television series throughout the ages, here are some of the top TV-inspired makeup trends:

1950s

With a heavy focus on liner, Lucille Ball’s makeup from I Love Lucy shows that, in the 1950’s, heavy makeup was used to make the eyes pop.

1960s

Entering into the next decade, heavy makeup was still a trend, but the focus was more on the lashes. Elizabeth Montgomery’s look from Bewitched is a great example of the pinup girl makeup that became so popularized.

1970s

After a couple decades of heavy makeup, the 70’s were all about natural looks. Maureen McCormick’s character from The Brady Bunch shows us just how soft the makeup vibe was at the time.

1980s

The 80’s brought back the bold looks and did so with lots of color. Lisa Bonet’s makeup in The Cosby Show is a beautiful example of that bright and bold style.

1990s

The next decade brought back a more natural makeup style, as seen on Jennifer Aniston in Friends. The bright, colorful glitter was replaced with matte and mauve colors that accentuated the eyes and lips.

2000s

The early 2000’s kept with that base makeup from the 90s but, as seen on Alyssa Milano from Charmed, full lashes were in. Lessening the eyeliner and bulking up on the top lash mascara was the technique to try.

2010s

In the 2010’s, a popular makeup trend was to add onto that 90s base and early 2000’s lash with a bold brow. Lucy Hale from Pretty Little Liars rocked those natural, bushy brows!

Today

And my personal favorite television makeup look is from Euphoria. Alexa Demie and her other castmates have pushed the boundaries with makeup, celebrating the idea of experimentation with color, style, boldness, etc. Euphoria has normalized playing with and expressing yourself through makeup

Television shows give us a timestamp of trends throughout the ages, which is a fun way to look back on the past. 2020 is an exciting time for makeup because it is all about experimenting with how you want to express yourself and testing out trends that make you feel most confident.

Makeup can be a powerful way to find your own unique identity and tell a story to the world around you.
