Mindfulness Activities to Alleviate the End of Summer Blues

With the end of the summer quickly approaching, the impending start of classes, internships, and jobs may feel daunting. While this “back-to-school” season may feel even more daunting given the turmoil we have endured the past few months, we have compiled a list of soothing mindfulness activities and practices to keep you sane!

Yoga

A cult favorite, there are so many different types of yoga that you’re sure to find a class that fits your interests and abilities. Whether you prefer a hot power yoga class, or favor a slow, meditative flow, the options are endless! Bonus, with many studios still closed (or limited) you are likely to find discounted prices or online options if the class atmosphere isn’t your jam!

While yoga is a great activity for mindfulness and stress relief, any regular and intentional movement will accomplish the same effects - go for a run or bike ride if that’s more your style, but get that body moving!

Journaling

Some of the best advice I have ever received from a doctor is to do a “brain dump” in the evenings before bed to help ease any worries or stress. Jot down everything on your mind (good, bad, neutral- just make a list!) in a journal and then physically close it and put it away when you’re done. Not only has this helped me fall asleep easier, but my general stress levels have lowered since implementing this daily.

Get some Vitamin D

Soak up the sun and warm weather while it’s still here, and aim for a minimum of 10-30 minutes a couple days a week for optimal vitamin D exposure. You’ll feel better physically and mentally. Remember to slather on the SPF to prevent sun damage or burns!

Make a playlist of your favorite songs

Recently I’ve been playing my “bliss” playlist on repeat. Whether you’re team Spotify or Apple Music, choose a wide variety of songs and vibes so you can shuffle through and connect with different emotions based on your mood, or just pick tunes that make you smile. A great playlist while driving almost always eases my mind, and the process of creating the playlist might be particularly soothing to you if you like organization!

Practice Affirmations

Set aside 5-10 minutes everyday (especially while getting ready in the morning) to do daily affirmations and get your day started on the right foot. Think happy and empowering thoughts, and set your intentions for the day moving forward- you got this!

While we are facing unusual circumstances, and seasonal changes can affect us deeply, it is important to seek activities that calm you down and provide stress relief. Do what makes you feel best and remember to treat yourself with grace and kindness, especially when you’re feeling a bit down or stressed; mental health is just as important as physical health!!
