A Look Inside My Tiny New York City Studio Apartment

Learn how to optimize your small living space, even if it is composed of only one room.

I recently moved into a studio apartment in Manhattan’s NoHo neighborhood, which sits north of SoHo, between Greenwich Village and East Village. Let me start by saying that my 550 square foot unit is undeniably small. But, to my surprise, it has become a cozy sanctuary to wake up in and come home to each night thanks to my design choices and storage hacks. Even if you’re not planning to move somewhere this small in the future, consider these tips essential to managing clutter and and creating a comfortable space to relax and rejuvenate each day.

The Bedroom

The bedroom and living room areas share a wall, so I decided that, in order to make the most out of the space, I needed to create a buffer between the bed and where the couch sits. By positioning the couch perpendicular to the bed, I created a noticeable differentiation between the two spaces. I chose a very simple bed from IKEA so as to not overwhelm the room. This particular bed even has storage underneath! I also decided on simple yet chic bedding from Anthropologie. Another key part of the bedroom area is the small marble and brass table from Pottery Barn, which matches the living area furniture. I found this adorable (and affordable, may I add) matching lamp from Target.

Moving on to the living room, it was essential for this area to be a place to relax and rejuvenate after a long day of work or during a lazy Sunday. Although the space is small, focusing on the utilization of mirrors and choosing furniture that actually fits makes it work. This velvet couch is definitely the statement piece of this area, and maybe even of the entire apartment. I purchased it from Brooklyn Space, a mid-century modern sofa company with gorgeous products and an incredibly fast delivery time.

If you’re looking for a dupe for “that mirror you see everywhere” AKA the Anthropologie Gleaming Primrose Mirror, look no further than PB Teen’s Ornate Filigree Mirror which retails for under $500.

I also recommend checking out aptdeco.com if you’re looking for furniture in NYC. This used furniture site includes professional deliveries with a verified group of buyers and sellers. I bought my Anthropologie marble and brass table for 50% cheaper than its usual price on AptDeco.

What is the essence of coziness, you may ask? Candles, a floral arrangement, and a good read! I absolutely love how the coffee table set-up turned out. The warm hues of cream, red, and orange bring a sense of warmth to the space, especially once the sun goes down in the evening.

The Kitchen

Since I just moved in last week, I haven’t had the chance to decorate my kitchen yet. Honestly, I kind of like how clean it is, especially since its in such close proximity to my bed.

And finally, the view from my window! I love the tree lined street and how the light comes in.

Simplicity is the key to ensuring a small apartment never gets too cluttered. However, adding personal touches is ultimately what makes a space cozy and comfortable. So, have fun with designing small spaces and remember to never take it too seriously!
