Dreaming Of Salem

Salem is a unique city with a ton of history that becomes even more lively than usual during October. Although Salem is a fun place to visit all year round, it really thrives during Halloween season, since it is pretty much a real-life Halloweentown.

Just 30 minutes north of Boston, Salem is the home of lots of spooky history, most famously the Salem Witch Trials. In 1692, a group of young girls claimed they were possessed by the devil, and that a group of local witches were responsible. A special court took place in Salem to condemn these accused witches, and almost 20 were hanged, in addition to the 150 others that were accused. This was a hysterical time in Salem’s history, and many believe there are still spirits and witchcraft in the city. To learn more about the Salem Witch Trials, you can visit the Salem Witch Museum in person, or check out their website.

One of the best hotels in Salem is the historic Hawthorne Hotel. This hotel has a long history, and is part of the Historic Hotels of America. It has elegant rooms in the heart of Salem, and there are special events in October like their own Halloween Ball, and special themed stays like Vampire Weekend. But, if you are traveling to Salem during a time of year that’s not October, it is still the perfect place to stay.

If you’re in Salem in October, there are many attractions and vendors all throughout the streets. Plus, there is an overall cozy yet spooky vibe to the city, thanks to the New England Fall weather and aesthetic. But, there are also year-round institutions and activities that are super interesting. Check out the House of the Seven Gables, the Witch House, the Old Burying Point Cemetery, and even the house from the movie Hocus Pocus. Salem is a unique city that blends its spirited history (no pun intended) with some of the best modern restaurants, stores, and attractions.
