Dreaming of Iceland

Last July, I visited Iceland with my family and it was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and unique places I’ve ever been to. Iceland is known for its incredible waterfalls, geothermal spas, geysers, volcanoes, hot springs, and lava fields.

Not only is Iceland known for its beautiful landscapes, it is one of the most sustainable countries on the planet. Almost 100 per cent of the electricity consumed comes from renewable energy. Not to mention, 9 out of every 10 homes in Iceland are heated directly with geothermal energy.

Iceland in the summertime is especially unique because of the midnight sun. From mid-May to mid-August, the sun only sets for up to 3 hours a day. Since we stayed in Iceland for only four days, we were able to explore for many more hours than would be possible elsewhere in the world.

One highlight of the trip was visiting the famous Blue Lagoon. Known to be an otherworldly wonder in the heart of a volcanic escape, Iceland’s Blue Lagoon is the ultimate destination for relaxation. We opted for the luxury experience at the Retreat Spa for private access to the retreat lagoon (which is much calmer and less crowded than the main pool), private changing rooms, and the ability to experience the secret blue lagoon ritual. With no photos allowed at the Retreat Spa, I had to check out the main geothermal pool for a few minutes to take pictures!

With July temperatures averaging 50°F, I recommend bringing a lot of layers and a warm coat. It was definitely colder than expected and it’s best to be prepared for any type of weather since it can vary throughout the day. I also strongly recommend renting a car at the airport to get around the city of Reykjavik and the surrounding natural attractions. It is very difficult to travel around Iceland without one, unless you are planning on taking tour buses everywhere.

The city of Reykjavik is full of history and culture. The city center is mostly walkable and easy to navigate. One must-do is paying to go to the top of the Hallgrimskirkja church. At the highest point of the city, the striking views of Reykjavik seen from the church tower are absolutely incredible.

For a warm coffee and place to relax, go to Café Babalú for the best crepes and the cutest atmosphere! We stumbled upon this gem and went here every single day we were in Iceland.

I loved every second of traveling to Iceland and cannot wait to go back one day!
